Hospital buildings were alway a part of Cistercian monasteries. However, in Germany this kind of building has only been able to be preserved until today in Eberbach. The Eberbach Hospital has not been changed by any subsequent remodeling work or new installations. It is a work of architecture with unusual expressive power from the transition phase between the Romanesque and Gothic periods. During the modern age, grapes were pressed at different times, and so the interior offers today the special atmosphere of a charming wine cellar. By darkening the windows, the room is then bathed in an expressive, subdued illumination, which is further emphasized by the wine fungus coating on the walls, the "Schwarzes Kellertuch" (Black Cellar Cloth). At the end of the tour, you will taste five selected wines in a special atmosphere, surrounded by old wine barrels illuminated only by candlelight. And what would be a better place than a former hospital to philosophize about the beneficial influence of wine on the health of man? |
