Eberbach was founded in 1136 by a group of monks who came directly from Clairvaux in Burgundy. The first monks, who were sent by St. Bernhard, brought with them from their homeland the strict rules of the Cistercian Order regarding monastic life as well as knowledge about architecture, handicrafts, agriculture and also winegrowing to the Rheingau. During the pioneer period of the Monastery, the Pinot Noir ("Klebrot") grape variety was mainly cultivated by the Cistercians. Only later did the Riesling grape variety achieve the unchallenged position of dominance which it enjoys in the Rheingau today. This tour is intended to convey the origins of the Eberbach culture and its wine culture to you via your senses. Of course, the excellent burgundy wines, which you will be able to taste at the end of the tour through the Monastery complex in the historical "Cabinetkeller", help to underscore this message. The selection of the three wines, which typify the burgundy wine type ( a "Spätburgunder Blanc de noir", a "Spätburgunder" and a "Frühburgunder"), emphasize the great variety for which the Pinot family is well known.
